Helena PM Reader – Room 8 Literacy (Thor)

PM Reader Challenge – The Trip to Rocky Ridge

For this task you need to do some reading out loud.

You will record a video of yourself reading the first page of your PM Reader.
At the SAME TIME you will use the Voice Typing feature on this Google Doc.

This will give you an opportunity to hear how you read, and to see how accurate your pronunciation is.

Start your Voice Typing here: The trip to Rocky Ridge I love going to visit Aunt Bonnie. Rocky Ridge said Ruby but the train trip is so boring. and we have to leave so early added her 10 year old twin brother Nate. outside the sky was dark except for a smudge of Pale Don light. Ruby gave a noisy on as she packed her every night back. neon to and then let out the twins and dated even yawning! however you need to be at the station in 10 minutes. quickly she pushed a library book into followed by a sketch pad and I say of little pins for stop I hope these will stop me from getting bored she told me the side it was such a long old journey to Rocky Ridge.

Attach the Google Drive link to your video here;

Once you have finished reading the text, answer these questions;

Why did the twins say the trip to Rocky Ridge was dull and boring?
Because they have to sit for the whole train ride.

Why did Ruby make up the rhyme?
Because the five stations before they get to Rocky Ridge rhymes and to past the time.

What would have lived in a salt lake millions of years ago?
Probably dinosaurs and lots of extinct animals.

Why would train drivers have to be careful in dust storms?
Because the windows might get covered in dust making the train drivers can’t see.

Why would a cow have wandered onto the rail track?
Because of the dust storm, The cow was probably in the farm and then the wind unlocked the gate making the cow can’t see and making it wander onto the rail track.

  • How did Aunt Bonnie know when the train would be arriving

Because Clare told the twins what time they would arrive and then Nate rang Aunt Bonnie and told her what happened.

Helena Create Tasks (Room 8 Literacy T4)

shipwreck on the ice with man in shadow with sword

Hello everyone, this is my create task.
I had multiple options to choose so I chose this.
I had to create a book cover for the text that I have recently been reading using AI tools.
So I used Craiyon (A cool AI Website I recommend it)
The text that I have recently been reading is about Famous explorer Ernest Shackleton and his shipwreck “The Endurance”.

Helena 200 Word Challenge – Pacing (T4W1)

200 Word Challenge

For this week’s 200 Word Challenge your job is to use a variety of sentence types in order to affect the pacing (how fast or slow the story moves).

Short, choppy sentences increase the pace.
Longer, more detailed sentences slow down the pace.

Using what you have learned about Ernest Shackleton, and his crew’s failed expedition to Antarctica write a recount of their dramatic journey.

Remember! This week we have been learning about chronological order. Make sure you get the sequence of events in the right order.

Begin your writing here: It all started in 1914, Ernest Shackleton and his crew went on a expedition to Antarctica, they set sail on a shipwreck called “The Endurance”. As they were aiming to reach Antarctica their ship became trapped in the Weddell Sea.

Unfortunately, in October 1915 they were forced to abandon their shipwreck and set up a camp on the ice. They embarked on a journey dragging their lifeboats across the ice. Months went by, and in April 1916 they reached Elephant Island, a remote place. Shackleton realized that they needed help, so he and a crew set out in James Caird, a lifeboat.

Navigating through stormy and icy conditions they had finally reached South Georgia Island in May 1916; however, their journey was not over yet. Shackleton and others had to rescue their stranded crewmates.

After a long 800-mile expedition Shackleton had successfully rescued all his crewmates from Elephant Island in August 1916. Luckily not a single life was lost, they did not reach their goal but at least they reached pretty far. When everyone heard about the story Ernest Shackleton immediately became a popular writer and speaker telling everyone his experiences. Their story of endurance, leadership, and survival has become legendary.

Helena Endurance – Response to Text (T4 W3)

Kia Ora Everyone, this is my response to text about the Endurance!
some of you might ask what is the Endurance?
well, the Endurance is a famous shipwreck owned by famous explorer Ernest Shackleton.
Ernest led an expedition along with his crew to Antarctica. However, they did not make it.
But they reached an area where no one has been before.
Anyways I hope you enjoy reading my work.
Feel free to leave a positive comment on my blog. 🙂

Begin your writing here: Today I received a letter from the MHC (Mountain Heights Club). I read it and they wanted me to compete in their mountain climbing competition that they are hosting on thursday and it was tuesday so I had 2 days to practice.  Obviously I wasn’t professional at climbing mountains and I didn’t have gear for it so I went to the mall first and got the gear. After practicing for the last 2 days the time has come.

I drove to the location that they told me to go to and felt anxious. Once I  arrived at the place and I saw a guy waiting for me at the entrance. He helped me suit up and I got my gear ready. I saw multiple contestants at the entrance waiting to be called out. After we got called out we went to the beginning line and prepared. Once we were ready we saw this guy with a megaphone and he yelled “3,2,1 GOOO!” I ran as fast as I could and started climbing. As I was climbing I saw this photographer taking photos and videos  of me. I finally reached the finish line and I won!  The prize was 1K.
